Thirty years under the one name. Thirty-three years working for myself. And a lifetime of lessons, challenges, risks, sacrifices, and achievements that have shaped what RTC is today.
RTC was founded in 1992 and incorporated in 1995, but the story began well before that — with an early release from my third year as an apprentice, an old car, a trailer, and a determination to build something meaningful from absolutely nothing. As the business continued to grow, my appointment as a director in 1996 marked an important milestone, and shortly thereafter the company became RTC Building Services Pty Ltd, reflecting its expanding vision, capabilities, and commitment to delivering quality building services.
When we say RTC grew from humble beginnings, we mean it literally.
In those early years, I worked more for knowledge than money. I chased experience, not comfort. I looked for the most experienced people I could learn from and treated every job, every challenge, and every mistake as part of the education process.
There was never a guarantee of success. Only a willingness to work, learn, adapt, and keep moving forward. Driven more by the fear of one day regretting not striving to be my best more than the fear of failure.
RTC was built on a can-do attitude and a relentless commitment to striving for excellence — excellence in the service of others: our clients, our people, my team & all who trusted me.
From the beginning, I believed leadership should never come from behind a desk. It should come from experience. From accountability. From being prepared to do the hard work yourself and stand alongside your people through both the pressure and the progress leading by example & based on facts- First to arrive, last to leave.
That philosophy became the foundation of our culture.
Today, as we reflect on thirty years under the RTC name, there is certainly much to be proud of.
What began with one person, one vehicle, a trailer & a dream has evolved into a national group of companies employing hundreds of people, engaging hundreds more subcontractors and supply partners, and delivering tens of thousands of work orders annually across Australia.
Our operations now stretch geographically across more than three quarters of New South Wales, two-thirds of South Australia, and all of Tasmania, supporting government agencies, state authorities, major brands, and critical infrastructure assets nationwide.
Over the decades, RTC has been recognised with close to fifty industry and business awards across safety, environmental achievement, leadership, quality systems, innovation, and management excellence, including several industry-first achievements nationally.
For more than three decades, RTC has achieved a level of sustained success and performance that few businesses attain, a legacy we are incredibly proud to uphold.
But growth alone is never the true measure of success.
The real achievement has always been the people behind the journey & what we stand for.
The employees who gave their commitment and effort. The subcontractors and suppliers who stood beside us. The clients who placed their trust in us. And the families who supported the sacrifices required to build something that holds a positive legacy. The legacy built on what we’ve done from the blood, sweat & tears. The creation of our own Charity ‘Foundation One’ for under privileged youth & our Not for Profit ‘The Concept Sports Development Centre’ as well as the hundreds of community sports teams, local Charities & programmes RTC has supported across the country. RTC has invested millions of dollars & a huge percentages of our revenue back into our communities. Focused on delivering equality, hope, self-belief, respect & unity, to allow children to be the best version of themselves possible through learning & practicing core values.
Because building a business is never just business. It is life.
It is resilience through uncertainty backed by discipline & consistency. It is honouring the promise I made myself when I had nothing to provide the support I wish I had & to deliver the positive changes needed. It is navigating setbacks, pressure, responsibility, and change, through honesty, self-reflection & accountability. It is continuing to move forward when circumstances test both your capability and your character.
Through every high and low, mistake made & lesson learned RTC has continued to evolve.
What has allowed that evolution is a culture that requires being honest, accountable, that reflects on the lesson, refines the process & delivers on it through action.
A growth-minded, solution-focused culture. A culture built on discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement. A culture where we start, do, review, refine, improve, and repeat — always striving to become better tomorrow than we were today.
Over time, our attitude has been strengthened by aptitude: decades of practical experience, lessons learned, systems, infrastructure, data-driven refinement, and collaborative leadership.
Although much has changed over thirty years, what we stand for has not.
We still strive to set standards in performance and service. We still believe in creating opportunity, security, and sustainable growth. We still value genuine relationships built on trust, respect, and reliability.
And we still believe excellence matters — not for recognition, but because people deserve our very best & personal success is founded on giving our best.
In our thirtieth year, we have also taken the opportunity to simplify, realign, and rebuild with purpose.
We have de-corporatised and returned to more founder-led operational leadership, focused on sustainability, operational efficiency, value creation, and long-term performance excellence.
Of course, founders are no longer young dogs trying to learn new tricks.
Now it is about experienced hands working together with emerging leaders — combining wisdom, energy, fresh thinking, and practical experience to help shape the next era of RTC.
One day soon, the pen will be passed to new leaders who will write their own chapter of what RTC becomes into the future.
And that is exactly how it should be.
Because a business that lasts is never built around one person alone. It is built around values, culture, people, and purpose that endure beyond any individual.
At its core, that purpose remains unchanged:
To do our best. To become the best version of ourselves possible. And to strive for excellence in the service of others.
To every employee, subcontractor, supplier, client, and supporter who has contributed to this journey over the past thirty years — thank you. You are part of our success. Part of our history. And part of the continuing story that is RTC.
Here’s to the next chapter. And to many more years ahead together, continuing to do our best today for a greater tomorrow.
